This free 2-2-3 schedule calendar runs in your browser and shows a 2-2-3 rotating shift pattern as month calendars, one crew at a time. You choose a start date for Crew A, set your shift times and hourly rate, and the page works out each crew’s days on, days off, paid hours and estimated gross pay. It also underlines public holidays, lets you record sick days, vacation and swapped shifts without changing the rotation, and exports your shifts as a calendar file or a CSV. Two patterns are available: a Pitman 2-2-3 with four crews, and a two-crew 2-2-3 for day work only. Pay figures are estimates under the rule pack you pick, not payroll advice.

How to use the 2-2-3 Schedule Calendar

  1. Choose a pattern in Schedule: Pitman 2-2-3 (fixed days and nights) or 2-2-3, two crews (days only).
  2. Set Crew A starts the cycle on to the first day of the rotation for crew A. The other crews follow the same cycle, delayed by a fixed number of days.
  3. Pick a crew in Crew (A, B, C or D) to see its calendar.
  4. Set First month and Months to show to choose which months appear.
  5. Enter the start, end and unpaid break for each shift type in Shift times and breaks. Hours and pay update from these times.
  6. Type your Hourly rate, then choose a rule pack in What sets your overtime?
  7. Read the result card for paid hours, shifts worked, overtime hours and estimated gross pay for the months shown.
  8. Use Find my crew to see which crew works a chosen shift on a chosen date.
  9. Tap a day to record what actually happened. On a work day you can mark sick, vacation, off or swapped shift. On a day off you can mark a picked-up shift. Marks never move the rotation.
  10. Export with Download calendar (.ics) for one calendar event per shift, or Download CSV for shifts with paid, regular and overtime hours and pay.

Press Print to print the calendar without the form. Public holidays are underlined in the calendar. Marks are stored only in this browser, so Clear my marks removes them.

What is a 2-2-3 schedule?

A 2-2-3 schedule is a rotating pattern in which a crew works 2 days, has 2 days off, works 3 days, has 2 days off, works 2 days, then has 3 days off. The cycle repeats every 14 days, and each crew works 7 of those days. Round-the-clock operations use it so that crews rotate through nights, weekends and holidays.

The weekly figures assume 12-hour shifts.

How does the two-week pattern work?

Crew A’s sequence over 14 days is D D O O D D D O O D D O O O, where D is a 12-hour day shift and O is a day off. Split into two weeks, the first week holds 5 shifts (60 hours) and the second holds 2 shifts (24 hours), which averages 42 hours per week. The calendar starts counting from the date you set in Crew A starts the cycle on.

Week 2O O D D O O O224

Crews B, C and D run the same sequence, delayed by fixed numbers of days. In the Pitman option, that offset lets one crew cover each hour. If your shift times leave a gap or overlap, the coverage line says so.

More questions

What are the most common shifts?

Most workplaces run day, evening and night shifts. This tool’s defaults are a 12-hour day shift from 07:00 to 19:00 and a 12-hour night shift from 19:00 to 07:00, plus 8-hour morning (06:00 to 14:00), afternoon (14:00 to 22:00) and night (22:00 to 06:00) shifts.

What is a rotating shift schedule?

A rotating shift schedule moves workers through a repeating cycle of work days and days off, and sometimes through different shift times. The 2-2-3 patterns here rotate crews on a 14-day cycle.

Does a 2-2-3 schedule cover every hour?

It depends on the crew count. The Pitman 2-2-3 with four crews covers every hour with exactly one crew under the default times, while the two-crew 2-2-3 works days only and leaves nights uncovered.

How much overtime does a 2-2-3 schedule create?

Overtime depends on the rule pack you pick under What sets your overtime?. In the worked example (Crew A of Pitman 2-2-3 from 1 Nov 2026, four weeks to 28 Nov, $30 an hour), the FLSA 40-hour standard gives 168 paid hours, 40 overtime hours at 1.5x and an estimated gross of $5640.00. The FLSA 7(k) fire rule (212 hours in 28 days) gives no overtime and $5040.00. Contracts and union agreements can differ, and this is not legal or payroll advice.

Why does overtime include hours outside the months I’m viewing?

Overtime is counted over whole workweeks. A week cut by the edge of the months shown still counts in full, so the total can reflect days you cannot see on screen.

How do I record a sick day or a swap without changing the rotation?

Tap the day and choose a mark. On a work day you can mark sick, vacation, off or swapped shift, and on a day off you can mark a picked-up shift. A picked-up shift counts as a normal shift toward the weekly or period threshold. For a contract or union rule, use the Overtime Calculator, which has a custom rule editor. Remove all marks with Clear my marks.

How this tool works and where the numbers come from

The calendar repeats the rotation from your crew’s start date and counts every shift minute by minute. Overtime and pay are worked out over whole workweeks (or the 7(k) and 7(j) work periods) under the rule pack you pick, following the official texts below. Results are estimates, not legal or payroll advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 2-2-3 shift pattern?

It is the same rotation described above, applied to shifts that keep a job running across days, nights and weekends. This calendar repeats it every 14 days, with each crew working 7 of them.

Which industries use a 2-2-3 shift?

The pattern suits any operation that must run around the clock and keep continuous coverage, such as hospitals, factories, security teams and emergency services.

What is shift work?

Shift work means staff work set hours outside the usual daytime schedule. Businesses that use it often operate 24 hours a day, so crews rotate through day, evening and night hours.

Is a 2-2 shift the same as a 2-2-3 shift?

Not exactly. A 2-2 rhythm is two days on and two days off, and the 2-2-3 pattern builds on that rhythm by adding a three-day block.

What is a split shift?

A split shift divides one workday into two or more periods with an unpaid break between them. This calendar lets you set one unpaid break per shift type in Shift times and breaks, so a split with more than one break is not modeled.

Is a 3-2-2 workweek the same as a 2-2-3 schedule?

Yes, the cycle is identical. Read the sequence starting from a three-day block and it becomes 3-2-2, so the crews work the same days, just counted from a different starting point.

What is a Pitman schedule?

A Pitman schedule is a 2-week rotating pattern with fixed day and night crews. The Pitman 2-2-3 option here uses four crews on a 14-day cycle, and the coverage line shows one crew covering each hour. The Pitman schedule calendar page covers that pattern in more detail.

What are swing shift hours?

Swing shift usually means the afternoon-to-evening shift that sits between day and night work. The default afternoon shift for 8-hour codes is 14:00 to 22:00, and you can change it in Shift times and breaks.
